On the role of parameters in Universal Grammar: a reply to Newmeyer

چکیده
Newmeyer (2004) argues that the notion of parameter of Universal Grammar has no role to play in accounting for cross-linguistic differences in syntax, and that, instead, “language-particular differences are captured by differences in language-particular rules” (183). He tries to show that parameter-approaches “have failed to live up to their promise” (181) and that “the hopeful vision of UG as providing a small number of principles each admitting of a small number of parameter settings is simply not workable” (185). In this paper, we defend the principles-and-parameters model of crosslinguistic variation. We propose that Newmeyer’s arguments against it are based on misunderstandings either of theory or of data, are conceptually misconceived, illogical or simply false. The rule-based alternative he suggests is hard to evaluate, since few actual instances of it are offered, and none is discussed in any detail. In a couple of instances that Newmeyer discusses, his rule-based account is a notational variant of a parameterbased theory. In other cases it represents a retreat to observational adequacy. The first part of the paper replies to Newmeyer’s critique of parameters (his pp. 198-215). The second part demonstrates an example of the efficacy of the parameter-based approach, drawing on work by Platzack and Holmberg on Scandinavian.

Relationship between Iranian EFL High School Students’ Knowledge of Universal Grammar and their Performance on Standardized General English Proficiency Tests
This study investigated the relationship between Iranian high school students’ Universal Grammar knowledge and their performance on such standardized general English proficiency tests as PET and FCE internationally administered by Cambridge University. To this end, 108 students were randomly chosen from some high schools located in Malayer from Hamedan. Since this study was correlational in nat...
متن کاملThe Role of Textual vs. Compound Input Enhancement in Developing Grammar Ability
The present study investigated comparatively the impact of two types of input enhancement (i.e. textual vs. compound enhancement) on developing grammar ability in Iranian EFL setting. Sixty-five female secondary high school students were selected as a homogenous sample out of about a 100-member population based on Nelson language proficiency test. Then, their grammar ability was measured based ...
متن کاملUniversal Grammar and Chaos/Complexity Theory: Where Do They Meet And Where Do They Cross?
Abstract The present study begins by sketching "Chaos/Complexity Theory" (C/CT) and its applica-tion to the nature of language and language acquisition. Then, the theory of "Universal Grammar" (UG) is explicated with an eye to C/CT. Firstly, it is revealed that CCT may or may not be allied with a theory of language acquisition that takes UG as the initial state of language acquisition for ...
متن کاملVariation and Bulgarian Inner Aspect
Of ongoing interest within generative grammar is the proper treatment of language variation in terms of parameters. One important recent question concerns the existence of macro-parameters. Baker (2008) outlines three ways to determine whether a parameter is macro or not, one of which relates to the size of effect, or impact of a parameter. The greater the size of effect, or impact a parameter ...
متن کاملSIL Electronic Book Reviews 2010-005 Possible and probable languages: A generative perspective on linguistic typology
This book has 5 chapters. Chapter 1, On the Possible and the Probable in Language, seeks to address the very basic question, “What does it mean to say that some grammatical feature is possible or impossible, or probable or improbable?” (p. 1). Newmeyer argues that what is possible in language is constrained by grammar, while what is probable is constrained by usage factors. He briefly addresses...
